Helsinki Christmas Market and Sauna yard
The Helsinki Christmas Market brings charm and warmth to visitors throughout the Christmas season. Helsinki’s largest and oldest outdoor Christmas market will be opened at the Senate Square Saturday 2 December. The charming Tori Quarters Christmas sauna will be moved from the City Hall courtyard to the heart of the market for the first time. The market is open until 22 December, Mon-Fri 11-20 and Sat-Sun 10-19.
The market will be opened on 2 December with an opening ceremony by Mayor Jan Vapaavuori at 10 am. The first steam will hiss in the sauna at noon, and Christmas carols will float in the air in the afternoon. Last year the Helsinki Christmas Market had a record-breaking audience of 350 000 visitors and this year the whole city is once again invited to enjoy the atmosphere without pressure to consume. The hugely popular old-time carousel returns to the Market and Santa Claus will once again be making his rounds in person. The market is open 11-20 during weekdays and 10-19 during weekends until the closing date 22.12.
Helsinki Christmas Market sauna and sauna yard
Finnish sauna culture and public saunas in Helsinki are experiencing a revival, with global interest. For the past four years, the Tori Quarters Christmas sauna hosted in the City Hall courtyard has delighted visitors and locals alike with the joys of the Finnish sauna spreading around the world from the United States to Asia. The steamy coziness can now be experienced right in the heart of the Christmas Market as a new tradition. Sauna-goers can step out to cool off while taking in the splendour of the Helsinki Cathedral rising over the square. The woodheated sauna is determinedly managed by the local sauna officer Kari Virtanen to ensure a good spirit and a peaceful atmosphere. As cooling drinks are an essential part of the sauna experience, the sauna yard will host a Christmas Sauna Bar run by two famed Finnish beverage houses, Kyrö Distillery and Ruosniemen Brewery.
The sauna yard is open Wed-Fri 15-10, Sat-Sun 14-19 and the fee is 5 euros (includes a towel).
Eat, drink, spend time
Helsinki Christmas Market prides itself on haute Christmas cuisine with the best restaurants in town popping up on the market with their holiday menus - a rare treat on a European level. The food court's main restaurants need no introductions for locals: the Restaurant of the Year 2017 Restaurant Grön and Helsinki Christmas Market favourite Kolmon3n will serve a wonderful array of seasonal flavours. A novelty this year is the market stage, with a programme ranging from puppet theatre to Christmas carols to entertain visitors.
Holiday gift shopping
The 133 vendor huts house a dazzling selection of artisans and small producers - sometimes even two to a hut. Ideas for gifts range from traditional Finnish himmeli ornaments made of straw to tar candles, modern jewellery, and design items - something for everyone! Front row vendors include local street-smart fashion houses Makia and Costo, and a special holiday delicatessen hosted by the department store Stockmann. Immaterial presents can be picked up at, for example, the stands of the Helsinki Zoo or the Sampo Puppet Theatre, selling popular yearly passes.
